Lesser Known Piano Christmas Hymns for Your Vocal Accompaniment or Listening Pleasure.
The Catholic Music Project 20: Christmas Hymns is a collection of mostly lesser known hymns from the Christmas season. The songs are recorded simply without a lot of embellishment so the melodies are dominant. They are also recorded with intros and ending so they can be used as vocal accompaniments or just for your listening pleasure and meditation.
Come, all ye shepherds, ye children of earth,
Come ye, bring greetings to yon heavenly birth.
For Christ the Lord to all men is given,
To be our Savior sent down from heaven:
Come, welcome Him!
Hasten then, hasten to Bethlehem’s stall,
There to see heaven descend to us all.
With holy feeling, there humbly kneeling,
We will adore Him, bow down before Him,
Worship the King.
Angels and shepherds together we go
Seeking the Savior from all earthly woe;
While angels, winging, His praise are singing,
Heaven’s echoes ringing, peace on earth bringing,
Good will to men.
As lately we watch'd o'er our fields thro' the night,
A star there was seen of such glorious light.
All thro' the night, angels did sing
Carols so sweet of the birth of a King.
A King of such beauty was ne'er before seen,
And Mary His mother so like a queen.
Blessed be the hour, welcome the morn,
For Christ our dear Saviour on earth now is born.
His throne is a manger, His court is a loft,
But troops of bright angels, in lays sweet and soft,
Him they proclaim, our Christ by name,
And earth, sky and air straight are filled with his fame.
Then shepherds, be joyful; salute your new King,
Let hills and vales ring to the song that ye sing.
Blessed be the hour, welcome the morn,
For Christ our dear Saviour on earth now is born.
The snow lay on the ground, the stars shone bright,
When Christ our Lord was born on Christmas night.
Venite adoremus Dominum.
Venite adoremus Dominum.
Venite adoremus Dominum.
Venite adoremus Dominum.
'Twas Mary, daughter pure of holy Anne,
That brought into this world the God made man.
She laid him in a stall at Bethlehem;
The ass and oxen shared the roof with them.
Venite adoremus Dominum.
Venite adoremus Dominum.
Saint Joseph, too, was by to tend the child;
To guard him, and protect his mother mild;
The angels hovered round, and sang this song,
Venite adoremus Dominum.
Venite adoremus Dominum.
Venite adoremus Dominum.
And thus that manger poor became a throne;
For he whom Mary bore was God the Son.
O come, then, let us join the heavenly host;
To praise the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Venite adoremus Dominum.
Venite adoremus Dominum.
While shepherds watched
Their flocks by night
All seated on the ground
The angel of the Lord came down
And glory shone around
And glory shone around
"Fear not," he said,
For mighty dread
Had seized their troubled minds
"Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind,
To you and all mankind."
"To you in David's
Town this day
Is born of David's line
The Savior who is Christ the Lord
And this shall be the sign
And this shall be the sign."
"The heavenly Babe
You there shall find
To human view displayed
And meanly wrapped
In swathing bands
And in a manger laid
And in a manger laid."
Thus spake the seraph,
And forthwith
Appeared a shining throng
Of angels praising God, who thus
Addressed their joyful song
Addressed their joyful song
"All glory be to
God on high
And to the earth be peace;
Goodwill henceforth
From heaven to men
Begin and never cease
Begin and never cease!"
A baby in the cradle
A baby child so bright;
He shineth as a mirror
Reflects a noble light
This tiny child so bright
The child of whom we're speaking
Is Jesus Christ the Lord
He brings us peace and brotherhood
If we but heed His word
Doth Jesus Christ, the Lord
And he who rocks the cradle
Of this sweet Child so fine
Must serve with joy and heartiness
Be humble and be kind
For Mary's child so fine
O Jesus, dearest Savior
Although Thou art so small
With Thy great love o'erflowing
Come flooding through my soul
Thou lovely Babe so small.
Comfort, comfort ye My people,
Speak ye peace, thus saith our God;
Comfort those who sit in darkness,
Mourning ’neath their sorrow’s load;
Speak ye to Jerusalem
Of the peace that waits for them;
Tell her that her sins I cover,
And her warfare now is over.
For the herald’s voice is crying
In the desert far and near,
Bidding all men to repentance,
Since the kingdom now is here.
O that warning cry obey!
Now prepare for God a way!
Let the valleys rise to meet Him,
And the hills bow down to greet Him.
Yea, her sins our God will pardon,
Blotting out each dark misdeed;
All that well deserved His anger
He will no more see nor heed.
She has suffered many a day,
Now her griefs have passed away,
God will change her pining sadness
Into ever springing gladness.
Make ye straight what long was crooked,
Make the rougher places plain:
Let your hearts be true and humble,
As befits His holy reign,
For the glory of the Lord
Now o’er the earth is shed abroad,
And all flesh shall see the token
That His Word is never broken.
Christ is born this evening,
Let us go rejoicing!
Though the night so gloomy,
Day will soon be dawning!
Angels from on high are singing
To the One who comes from heaven:
"Gloria, Gloria, Gloria,
In excelsis Deo!
Angels from on high are singing
To the One who comes from heaven:
"Gloria, Gloria, Gloria,
In excelsis Deo!
Shepherds, hasten yonder,
Where the Babe most holy,
In this cold December,
Lies in manger lowly.
See the star on high is gleaming
O'er the lovely Infant beaming!
"Gloria, Gloria, Gloria,
In excelsis Deo!
See the star on high is gleaming
O'er the lovely Infant beaming!
"Gloria, Gloria, Gloria,
In excelsis Deo!
The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown:
O, the rising of the sun,
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.
The holly bears a blossom,
As white as lily flow'r,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To be our dear Saviour:
O, the rising of the sun,
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.
The holly bears a berry,
As red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To do poor sinners good:
O, the rising of the sun,
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.
The holly bears a prickle,
As sharp as any thorn,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
On Christmas Day in the morn:
O, the rising of the sun,
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.
The holly bears a bark,
As bitter as any gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
For to redeem us all:
O, the rising of the sun,
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in-
Sweet singing in-
In the choir.
What star is this with beams so bright,
More lovely than the sun's own light?
'Tis sent to announce the newborn King;
Glad tidings of our God to bring.
'Tis now fulfill'd as God decreed:
"From Jacob shall a star proceed,"
And lo! the Eastern sages stand
To read in heav'n the Lord's command.
As from this star glow outward rays,
An inward light the Lord conveys,
And urges them with force benign
To seek the giver of the sign.
Lullay, Thou little tiny Child,
By, by, lully, lullay.
Lullay, Thou little tiny Child.
By, by, lully, lullay.
O sisters, too, how may we do,
For to preserve this day;
This poor Youngling for whom we sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.
Herod the King, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day;
His men of might, in his own sight,
All children young, to slay.
Then woe is me, poor Child, for Thee,
And ever mourn and say;
For Thy parting, nor say nor sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.
Angels from the realms of glory
Wing your flight through all the earth
Ye who sang creation's story
Now proclaim Messiah's birth
